DHHS would like to encourage every senior student to complete the online FAFSA or Dream Act.  DHHS will submit a verified Cal Grant GPA for you (see Cal Grant below for more details).  To be considered for a Cal Grant you must complete the FAFSA or CADAA.

The first step in the financial aid process for students is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The information that students provide on the FAFSA is used to determine their eligibility for most financial aid.  Students and parents can submit their FAFSA  AFTER October 1st of the student's senior year in high school. 
 
 

DREAM Act Application

The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is available for students who qualify for AB540 residency status and are not eligible to complete the FAFSA application.  The CADAA is available starting October 1st of each year for the upcoming academic year.  The CADAA will determine your eligibility for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG) as well as additional forms of financial aid offered by the State of California.

CAL GRANTS ARE FREE MONEY!!!
There are three kinds of CAL Grants:  Cal Grant A; Cal Grant B; and Cal Grant C. Cal Grants can be used at any UC, CSU, California Community College, almost all independent colleges, and many career and technical schools in California.
 
Cal Grants are for students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree or vocational or career training, and do not have to be repaid. In addition to meeting the financial criteria and Cal Grant requirements, you must: 
  • submit the FAFSA or Dream Act application and your verified Cal Grant GPA by the March 2nd Cal Grant deadline
  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen or meet AB540 eligibility criteria
  • be a California resident for 1 year
  • attend a qualifying California college
  • not have a bachelor’s or professional degree
  • have financial need at the college of your choice
  • have family income and assets below the minimum levels
  • be enrolled or plan to enroll in a program leading to an undergraduate degree or certificate
  • be enrolled or plan to enroll at least half time
  • Effective with the 2021-22 academic year, registration with the Selective Service System (SSS) for males 18-25 years of age is no longer required to receive state financial aid in California. Although registration is not required to receive state financial aid in California, failure to register may impact future opportunities and/or benefits.  Check with the U.S. Selective Service System for more information at https://www.sss.gov/register/benefits-and-penalties/. 
  • not owe a refund on any state or federal grant or be in default on a student loan
  • not be incarcerated
  • maintain the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards as established by the school. Recipients who do not meet the standards are ineligible for Cal Grant payment and will not use eligibility during the terms they are ineligible for payment.
